Why You Should Join a Student Organization

By Ashley Paskill on September 9, 2018

You have heard it time and time again: “Get involved on campus.” Professors and career advisors alike constantly remind their students of the importance of joining a student organization. Are these organizations worth your time and effort, especially since student life is crazy enough as is? There are definite benefits to joining clubs and organizations on campus.

1. Networking and Community

Whether you join an organization related to your major or not, student organizations are a great way to network with your peers. You never know who you will meet, and even if you do not meet people within your field, they may know someone who is in your field or you may be able to use their expertise down the line. Also, joining organizations is a great way to make new friends on campus, which helps college life seem less stressful. This may also come in handy if you end up in classes with those you meet so you can buddy up to exchange notes.

2. Expand Your Resume

Being involved on campus looks great on your resume, even if your organization is not directly related to your career. While getting a perfect GPA is impressive, showing that you are active outside of the classroom is important and tells employers that you take initiative. If your organization is not related to your field, your involvement shows that you are willing to learn new things, which is something that employers love to see on resumes.

3. Learn New Skills and Practice Old Ones

If you join an organization related to your career field, you will have the opportunity to practice what you have learned in the classroom and even learn new things before taking a class where you will learn the skills. This puts you ahead of the curve and will prepare you to do well in the class. Joining an organization outside of your realm of study allows you to learn things that you may not have otherwise, which looks good on your resume and shows employers that you are willing to learn new things. This makes you a more marketable employee.

4. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

No matter what kind of organization you join, you have the opportunity to take a step outside of your comfort zone. This will help you grow as a person, both as an individual and as a professional. You will gain confidence, leadership, and communication skills that will stay with you the rest of your life. The memories you make will stay with you forever and being involved on campus will give you’re a sense of community and pride in your college that you would not get if you did not get involved on campus.
