6 Things Every Introverted Recruiter Can Do to Thrive at Work

By Brittany Loeffler on October 10, 2018

Being an introvert in an extroverted world can be challenging, especially when it comes to being an introverted recruiter. While introverts are typically more creative than extroverts, it can be difficult to express and implement these creative ideas when it comes to being in front of people or even talking to people.

Some introverts may be under the impression that certain jobs aren’t right for them because of their shy tendencies. When it comes to being an introverted recruiter there are a few things that you can do to ensure that you thrive at work.

What Introverts Can Expect Being a Recruiter

A recruiter’s job is to help companies find qualified candidates for open positions. This involves a lot of communication with strangers over the phone, through email, and text. Most of the time, the recruiter reaches out to potential candidates to apply for the job, which means an introverted recruiter can expect to make the first move when it comes to starting a conversation. However, one of the best things about being an introverted recruiter is that there is hardly any face-to-face time with these candidates.

Do Your Research

Before getting on the phone with a potential candidate, the best thing that you can do as an introverted recruiter is research. Learn everything there is to know about the job position so you have the correct information during your phone call. When you know something like the back of your hand, your confidence is boosted because you know you can answer almost any question that is thrown at you.

You should also research the person you will be speaking with. Look at their resume and work history and prepare any questions you may have for them. This will help the conversation flow a little better.

Have a Script

A loose script can help an introverted recruiter when making phone calls. Talking on the phone can be challenging for introverts and make them very nervous. Having a script to read from gives you more direction as to how the conversation will go.

This script is not meant to be read throughout the entire conversation, though. It is simply a way to easily start a conversation with a stranger. After a few minutes of talking, you’ll feel more comfortable and get a feel for how the conversation will flow.

Practice Pitches

While it may feel silly to practice pitches and conversations, it can be incredibly helpful for introverted recruiters. Take some time and go through your presentation or pitch alone in your office. Practice saying the words and sentences so that you do not stumble over them during the actual pitch.

If you start to feel more comfortable practicing your pitches and want an audience, ask your coworkers or friends to sit and listen to you. Let them offer critiques and suggestions as to how you can make the pitch better. Soon, you’ll have it memorized and your confidence will be through the roof.

Follow Up if You Forget Something

As an introverted recruiter, you may be more likely to forget to mention something during a conversation because there are a million things going through your mind. Remember, it’s okay if you forget to mention something, it isn’t a big deal. It happens to everyone. To make up for this mistake, follow up with your candidate through an email or another phone call if you’re feeling up to it. A simple, “I forgot to mention…” can make all the difference when it comes to finding the right candidate.

Utilize Social Media

Social media is a game changer when it comes to being a recruiter. LinkedIn is the most helpful social media platform recruiters can use. Connect with people in different industries, post open jobs to your newsfeed, and have conversations with potential candidates all from your computer. A quick LinkedIn message can change your entire career!

Take Time for Yourself

Introverts need to take time for themselves. They need to be alone to recharge. This could mean simply reading a book, browsing through Facebook, or just sitting looking into space. As an introverted recruiter, it’s essential to take this time to recharge. Understand how exhausting talking to strangers on the phone can be.

When you make this time for yourself, you’ll feel more motivated to do a great job and show your coworkers that just because you are an introverted recruiter doesn’t mean you aren’t fit for the job.

Succeed as an Introverted Recruiter

Once you realize you are an introvert, life can be so much easier when you figure out what works for you. When it comes to being an introverted recruiter, there are some things like researching, practicing pitches, writing a script, and using social media, that can help you succeed and thrive in your office.
