By Nicole Hindberg on October 16, 2018

Everyone has heard it, from their family, friends and whoever else they talk to about their college plans, that you will change your major approximately three times. Which is completely normal.

They also tell you that you should major in something your freshmen year, but it’ll be fine if you don’t stick with it because you’ll change your major about three times. Why not skip that step and start out with a completely blank slate? You may have had an idea of what you wanted to do when you ended high school but what they say about college is true, it changes you. College is all about finding yourself. Finding out what you like, what you don’t like and what your views on different things are. Trust me when you live on your own for the first time a lot of things will change.

There are many benefits to going Undecided your freshmen year but here are just a few

1. Exploring a wide range of programs.

You’ll meet hundreds of people during your first semester of college and you will hear the question “what’s your major?” time and time again. It’s a good icebreaker for meeting new people in college and is a very easy conversation-starter. Once you open yourself up to all the possibilities your campus has to offer you will be surprised. You will most likely learn about a major that you never knew existed and never knew you’d be interested in.

2. You won’t get behind

Just because you don’t have a major your first year doesn’t mean that you will fall behind. You have many resources to take advantage of to make sure that doesn’t happen such as upperclassmen, your advisers and your professors. You will most likely fall behind if you start getting into a major and change your mind halfway through because you’ll be stuck with a bunch of classes that don’t apply to anything anymore.

3. Most campuses offer additional advising to undeclared students

Yeah, that’s right, most campuses have advisers specifically there to help students who haven’t quite figured out their major yet. They are there to aid in discovering classes that appeal to your interests and help you decided what suits you the most. They are just another valuable source to help you decide what you want to do.

All in all, college is the time where you get to explore who you are. You get so many new experiences in just the first week of being there. Don’t let people tell you that you don’t have time to change your mind, because you do. You have four years. Make them count and explore everything your campus has to offer.
