Store Spices for Freshness

Before getting into the fun ways to store spices to make your kitchen look more stylish and unique, here are a few tips on how to keep your spices fresher for a longer period of time. While spices never technically go bad, they can lose their flavor over time. Spices, when stored correctly, can last for almost four years!

Most spices should be kept at room temperature in an airtight container and stored in a dark place, such as a cabinet or generally away from direct sunlight. The only exceptions are chili powder, paprika, and any other red pepper spice. These should be kept in the fridge so their colors and flavors don’t fade.

Mason Jars

What can’t a mason jar be used for? You can store spices in mason jars very easily thanks to their tight seal and variety of sizes. If you’re wondering how and where you should keep them, a drawer is a great place! Use some chalkboard paint on the lid of the mason jars so you can write the name of the spice in chalk on the top. This will make locating the spice you need much easier compared to keeping them in a cabinet or guessing just by the texture and color.

Test Tubes

Maybe you don’t use spices too often while cooking. One creative way to store spices is in glass test tubes with a cork at the top to keep it fresh. You can store these test tube containers in a box or a test tube rack to keep your spices organized. On the cork, you can write the name of the spice or create a label to wrap around the tube. Your friends will be impressed by this unique idea and will surely want to copy it in their own kitchens.

Magnetic Tins

If you have a small kitchen with little cabinet and counter space, you have another option to store spices. Use containers with magnets on them and stick the containers to your fridge. You won’t take up any precious counter or cabinet space that could be used in a better way. This is also a great way to show off your spice collection.

If you don’t like the way the containers look on the fridge, you can also add a magnetic strip to the inside of one of your cabinet doors and keep your spices there rather than on the shelves in the cabinet. Don’t be afraid to get creative with the placement.

Coca-Cola Bottles

You may have a decor theme for your kitchen. If that theme happens to be vintage, old glass Coca-Cola bottles are a great unique way to store spices. Now you’re probably wondering where do you keep the soda bottles? You can get a cubby with square spaces to put the bottles in. On the bottom of the bottle, make a label for which spice it contains.

Leveled Platforms

There is nothing wrong with going the traditional route and storing spices in a spice cabinet. However, to better organize these spices, you can buy an insert that looks like a little set of steps. This allows you to stack your spices on different levels so that it’s easier to see their labels right in front of you. While it may not be the most creative option, it definitely makes grabbing that oregano bottle much easier than having to sort through every spice you own looking for it.

Rotating Spice Rack

If you have some counter space to spare, you can always go with a rotating spice rack. There are some pretty unique looking spice racks that will add some decor to your kitchen counters without even trying. Just keep the rack out of direct sunlight and spin away until you find the spice you’ve been looking for!

Organize Spices in Creative Ways

There are many ways for you to creatively store spices in your kitchen. From mason jars to a traditional rotating spice rack, you’ll never have to worry about wasting time looking for that special spice.
